CHAPTER EIGHT

After forcing herself to eat the sandwich under Roxie’s stern gaze, Ava found herself standing outside Cormac’s study with the young Shifter standing beside her. Roxie tapped on the door and waited. When no answer was forthcoming, she knocked again, harder.

“That’s odd. I’m sure he said he would be here,” she said.

“I am here.” The dark velvety voice had both women spinning around to find the Midnight Alpha standing behind them in the hallway. “You need to work on your awareness,” he murmured to Roxie as he leaned between them to unlock the door.

Roxie dipped her head in acquiescence. “I’ll find someone to practice with.”

Cormac paused. “We need to get back into a routine. Go and find Asher. Ask him to pull the schedules we had for training back in L.A. and work out a new one for here.” Stepping through the doorway into the study, he held the door open. “Come in, Ava.”

Ava’s eyes danced from Roxie to him and then down to the floor. She wanted to ask the other woman to stay with her. Before she could speak, she felt Cormac’s hand curl around her wrist and tug her forward. With one last longing glance at Roxie, she stepped through, and the door swung shut behind her.

“Now where’s that fire of yours gone?” he asked, and her eyes jerked to meet his then bounced again.

“What do you mean?”

His hand rose until his fingers could cup her chin and tilt her head back. “You’re trying to be invisible. Your shoulders are curved inwards, you’re keeping your head lowered. You won’t make eye contact with me.”

“As an Alpha wouldn’t eye contact mean I’m challenging your dominance?”

“Do you want to challenge my dominance?” The rich amusement in his voice heated her cheeks. His fingers left her chin, and she heard him moving away. “Come and sit down.”

Ava took a chance and looked at him while his back was to her. He was clad in formal black pants and a white silk shirt. His dark hair was damp, slicked back, suggesting he’d recently showered. Beneath the white silk, she was sure she could see the faint outline of a tattoo on one shoulder. She didn’t recall seeing a tattoo the night before, but she’d been trying not to pay close attention to his body.

When he turned abruptly and caught her eyes on him, one dark eyebrow arched above silvery-gray eyes.

“Looking for weak spots?” He leaned a hip against the large desk and gazed at her. “You could have tried to hit me over the head while my back was turned. You had a three or four-second window, ample opportunity to grab something heavy.”

Ava gaped at him. Was he serious?

“You didn’t even consider it, did you?” he said after a moment’s silence.

She shook her head immediately.

Consider it? Something like that would be signing her own death warrant.

The smile playing about his lips faded as he stared at her. “I can see it’s going to take a while for you to trust us.
